At UMCOL, we raise domesticated animals to produce meat, eggs and milk. We rear pigs, snails, goats, chickens and cows. We practice ethical animal agriculture; Our Animals are raised in a way that allows them to express their natural behaviors with constant access to a similar environment to the one they would find in the wild.
Our courses analyse the role of livestock production in climate smart agriculture. It describes the importance of livestock production to food security and identifies adaptation and mitigation strategies and practices along the entire livestock supply chain. It also illustrates how livestock keeping is itself an adaptation strategy and how the sector can contribute to the global mitigation effort.
UMCOL processes local Nigerian foods, such as Egusi (mellon), Ogbono (irvinga gabonensis), grounded pepper and crayfish, corn powder, yam powder and more. We have needed methods to process food for optimized nutrition, longer storage life and improved flavor. Some of our food processing methods are cooking, drying, smoking, fermentation, pickling and salting.
This is the process where monies are paid for food items in bits for a period of time, after which food items are shared amongst contributors. This idea is to ease the stress of saving up money for food and it is a means to get foods at a cheaper rate compared to the local market. Food items are usually shared at the end of the year. We have three packages: gold, silver and bronze.
